The following is in reference to CareerBuilder.com, an online jobs board, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

CareerBuilder Job Scam

I posted my resume on www.careerbuilder.com; I was solicited by a potential employer affiliated with CareerBuilder, Niamax Limited. The email was sent on CareerBuilder letterhead, as are many emails I receive from the CareerBuilder site. The soliciting company's website is www.niamax-ltd.com; this company is listed as doing business in the United Kingdom.

After expressing my interest with their company, I was emailed a legal document (employment contract) to email or fax back to them. The employer then conducted a preliminary "background check" on me and offered me a job. I agreed to work part-time for them as an independent contractor, processing payments from their customers in the United States. I was instructed that I needed to process these payments through Wells Fargo Bank, and would need to obtain a Wells Fargo Bank account if I currently didn't own one.

I accepted two payments (online transfers) into my Wells Fargo Bank account from two other Wells Fargo Bank customers that were supposedly Niamax customers. I was instructed to send the bulk of each payment to a specified business associate, after subtracting my 6% commission, and the Western Union transfer fee. I sent both payments to business associates in Athens, Greece by Western Union; both payments were picked up same day. One man's name was Cornet Deglos, the other was Cleys Mercken.

Wells Fargo Bank has now reversed the initial online customer transfers into my account, stating the transactions were unauthorized (hacked from the accounts of other Wells Fargo Bank customers). I am now responsible for the gross amount ($1977.30) of both unauthorized transactions into my account because I withdrew the money and sent it on, as instructed by my employer, Niamax Limited.

Wells Fargo Bank is not interested in discussing the fact that their system was breached by a hacker, or the fact that I only processed the payments. I asked Wells Fargo Bank why holds were not placed on these online transfers into a NEW account, but they gave no answers, and didn't provide me with an explanation.

Additionally, I notified CareerBuilder's Integrity Team regarding their affiliation with this employer. The representative stated CareerBuilder can't screen all employers utilizing their website, and that I should have read their fraud disclaimer, which is obscurely located in fine print on their website.

My sincere appreciation to this site and to all you who entered your experiences with this particular job opportunity scam. In retrospect, of course it was suspicious in nature, and rang a few bells. Thankfully, I gave pause. Nevertheless, this community service each of you are participating in provides the rest of us the comfort of second opinion, as it were. Good work people! - Thank you for sharing your online experiences for the benefit of others!

Hello people,

Me too, I got actually many offer of this kind from careerbuilder, but I never answered or replied back. I always check and check and check all over the net prior to make a decission. If you've been out of work for a while (as I am), don't dispair, what's yours is coming anyway sooner or later, don't rush into interviews, replies, accepting, etc until you are absolutely sure it is not a scam. People being out of work for too long tend to become very vulnarable and scamers know that. Even if the email is from a company with good solid reputation, they can wait one day until you reply back, but most likely, a true potential offer opportunity doesn't come via email, most likely it is the professional way, calling you on the phone.

Good luck to all of you !
Cheers,

I was a victim of a Careerbuilder scam but this one was in similiar but a different company. I was contacted supposedly through Careerbuilder by a Robert Harris from Tax Advice Services Ltd. What I didn't know was that gmail hides the email address from you initially unless you ask it to show details. I would have seen that this was from a hotmail address and deleted the email. The position was for a Refund Remittance. I sent a copy of my resume and filled out an employment application and everything. I was set up online as a employee at ta-personnel.com. This happened over the course of several weeks where I was sent a training manual, employee handbook, the works. I had a phone interview and even was told I was fine with doing training. Yesterday I received my first 'tasks'. As with the Wells Fargo scams I was asked to Western Union the money. When I tried to log on to their system this morning, I was not able to get in. I started a new profile when it dawned on me I was probably scammed. I looked through the careerbuilder website on fraudulent job offers and I was looking as some of the examples but none matched what I had. I was able to look up the company online and everything. I got a call later this afternoon from my bank telling me that my account was involved in fraudulent activity. I was directed to make copies of everything I had for a file and they were to close my account. According to the bank, I only transferred a portion of the money and they had been on the phone for hours.
I'm lucky that my bank was just going to close my account and open me a new one since it was compromised. I have to file a police report to finish everything and to show I was a victim.
Moral of the story: If its too good to be true, it probably is...
And just because its not your money that is going in the account, doesn't mean that its not going to be a problem.
