The following is in reference to CareerBuilder.com, an online jobs board, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

CareerBuilder Job Scam

I posted my resume on www.careerbuilder.com; I was solicited by a potential employer affiliated with CareerBuilder, Niamax Limited. The email was sent on CareerBuilder letterhead, as are many emails I receive from the CareerBuilder site. The soliciting company's website is www.niamax-ltd.com; this company is listed as doing business in the United Kingdom.

After expressing my interest with their company, I was emailed a legal document (employment contract) to email or fax back to them. The employer then conducted a preliminary "background check" on me and offered me a job. I agreed to work part-time for them as an independent contractor, processing payments from their customers in the United States. I was instructed that I needed to process these payments through Wells Fargo Bank, and would need to obtain a Wells Fargo Bank account if I currently didn't own one.

I accepted two payments (online transfers) into my Wells Fargo Bank account from two other Wells Fargo Bank customers that were supposedly Niamax customers. I was instructed to send the bulk of each payment to a specified business associate, after subtracting my 6% commission, and the Western Union transfer fee. I sent both payments to business associates in Athens, Greece by Western Union; both payments were picked up same day. One man's name was Cornet Deglos, the other was Cleys Mercken.

Wells Fargo Bank has now reversed the initial online customer transfers into my account, stating the transactions were unauthorized (hacked from the accounts of other Wells Fargo Bank customers). I am now responsible for the gross amount ($1977.30) of both unauthorized transactions into my account because I withdrew the money and sent it on, as instructed by my employer, Niamax Limited.

Wells Fargo Bank is not interested in discussing the fact that their system was breached by a hacker, or the fact that I only processed the payments. I asked Wells Fargo Bank why holds were not placed on these online transfers into a NEW account, but they gave no answers, and didn't provide me with an explanation.

Additionally, I notified CareerBuilder's Integrity Team regarding their affiliation with this employer. The representative stated CareerBuilder can't screen all employers utilizing their website, and that I should have read their fraud disclaimer, which is obscurely located in fine print on their website.

I am SO GLAD that I googled this information before giving my PayPal information! I read all the fine print. These people have covered ALL THEIR BASES . . . explaining why you need to be so diligent in this job, why they ask for your bank account information and no upfront investment needed. It felt too good to be true, but i kept going back and re-reading thinking I was going to find the 'catch'. But, when I had to give them my PayPal log-in information it just didn't seem right . . . and I found everyone's notes here.

Also, there is a 'contact us' option on the website and a headquarters physical address is listed as 140 2nd Ave. Mayfield, NY 12117. Try to map it on Google maps/satellite . . . very disturbing to me even if it is a 'home-based' business. This really sucks. Thanks to everyone for this information.

My daughter was just scammed by a fraudulent company posting a fraudulent job on Career Builders. They told her she was going to be a personal assistant and sent her via UPS $2,000 in money orders which she was supposed to deposit in her personal bank account and send them the case. Unfortunately, she did not see this coming at all mainly because she doesn't think like a criminal and thought it was legit. She was desperate for a job and it seemed legitimate to her. Immediately, they sent $5,000 more in money orders and told her to cash them and send them the case. By this time she was suspicious and told them no and sent the stuff back. They threatened her saying they were going to contact the FBI if she did not do it. (rolls eyes).

They need to be reported to the FBI. Anyway, she ended up with a negative balance of $1,800 in her Chase Bank account of which they managed to siphon some from her father's account because he was a joint account holder. He only had a couple hundered in his account so she still owes Chase a ton of money. They are threatening to destroy our credit if we don't pay it.

We reported this to the local police department who said they can't do anything since it is online and these people are most likely out of the country. We also took everything to the local State's Attorney's office. We contacted a local lawyer who wants $250/hr. to take the case. It would end up costing us more money to pursue justice than to just pay up.

My advice after this experience is to tell your children not to use Career Builders under any circumstances. They don't screen out these fraudulent companies and don't share any risk when someone who is niave about the ways of the world gets scammed. Their click-wrap contract is weighed heavily in favor of them, they taking no risk at all for who they allow to post on their site.

The position being offered is for Financial Forwarding Coordinator.

For the most part what the job requires is for someone to be available Monday through Friday, 9 to 11 am. Your main job would be monitoring your on-line Task Manager, which you’ll create on our site once you’re employed. Once the funds enter your account, your supervisor will notify you and assign you your tasks for the day. At this point you would go to your bank, withdraw the funds and transfer them using Western Union or Money Gram, as instructed by your supervisor. We provide quick, easy, efficient and secure ways for businesses to out source services locally, nationally and globally to maximize their competitive advantage and cost effectiveness.

You would always be aware of where the funds are coming from and where they are going.
