Recently, everytime I boot Windows XP, a window 'Diagnostic Traces' is displayed. It shows these messages:
SSDIAG activated
new _DIAGWINDOW(DrvnQ117)
delete _DIAGWINDOW(DrvnQ117)

Below is a screenshot. Where does this come from?
Diagnostic Traces

Run MSCONFIG, and look if 'Diagnostic Startup' is checked (as shown in the screen below).
Instead the first option 'Normal Startup' should be selected.
It is unclear who changed the selection.

MSConfig Startup Options

Then check in MSConfig on the 'Startup' tab, if there is a program 'ssdiag.exe' with a checkmark. Remove that checkmark. I found that it references to d:\windows\ssdiag.exe
I looked at the publisher of this file ssdiag.exe and found that it stated 'Copyright 2004 Sonic Solutions'.
Sonic Solutions is the manufacturer of a CD burner software that I recently had re-installed on my laptop. We found the culprit! I found that it is safe to delete the 2 related files
  • ssdiag.exe
  • ssdiag.ini

Thanks very much. Actually.I've already found out that it is adware that comes in through Sonic's drive letter access. I found this out, and also found that file called ssdiag.exe and deleted it. I then deleted the dla file in Sonic Solutions program. Thanks a lot.

Do a search for either ssdiag.exe or ssdiag.ini one of them will be found, delete it.
You might have to search in hidden files or folders, i can't remember.
