Search and Replace in the Windows registry

Question:

How can I do a (repeated) search and replace in the Windows registry? The registry editor regedit.exe seems not to have such a menu item.

Answer:

Go to the branch below you want to do the search and replace, export it to a text file (extension .reg) and open it with Notepad.
Do the search and replace there, then import it back into the registry.

Notes:
  1. You will not be able to import below some keys like HKEY_USERS - which only makes sense.
  2. Obviously this is a very powerful tool and you need to be very careful with where you change, especially if you exported a lot.
  3. There are also freeware tools that allow such a search and replace.
